What is Medical Payment Coverage (MPC) and Why Does It Matter?

Medical Payment Coverage, or MPC, is a part of your automobile insurance policy in Indiana. In Florida, there is also a form called PIP, or Personal Injury Protection. If you are in legal or insurance circles, you can also hear this commonly referred to as “MedPay.” MedPay is the portion that helps pay for medical expenses resulting from a car accident, regardless of who was at fault. Unlike liability insurance, which covers damages to other parties, MedPay is for personal protection. MedPay can help by covering high health insurance deductibles or treatment that your health insurance may not fully cover.

In Indiana, as in many other states, MedPay coverage is optional. It typically covers expenses like ambulance fees, hospital stays, surgery, X-rays, and other medical treatments related to injuries sustained in a car accident.

In Florida, MedPay Coverage is optional. It covers treatment and expenses similar to Indiana. However, Florida is required to have PIP as a part of their auto insurance. PIP coverage is similar to MedPay in that it provides coverage for medical expenses resulting from a car accident, but it also covers other expenses such as lost wages and funeral expenses. However, drivers in Florida have the option to purchase additional MedPay coverage on top of their PIP coverage for added protection.
